The Mt. Angel Fire District, formerly known as the "Mt. Angel Fire Department," was established after the 23rd legislature incorporated Mt. Angel as a city in 1905, with Fred Schwab serving as its first Mayor. Although Mt. Angel had a fire department as early as the 1890s, 1905 marked the formation of a formal organization under a city government. Over the years, the fire service structure evolved significantly. The Mt. Angel Rural Fire Protection District was established in 1946 and began contracting fire protection services from the City of Mt. Angel in 1947. In November 2003, voters of the city and the Rural Fire District approved the annexation of the former fire department into the Rural Fire Protection District, along with a name change to the Mt. Angel Fire District. Today, the Mt. Angel Fire District protects approximately 35 square miles with one station, a dedicated team of 30 to 40 volunteers, three full-time employees, and a part-time fire chief.
